USC's football players came dressed for a funeral Saturday
afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium.
But the funeral turned out to be their own.
Two Gamecock turnovers late in the fourth quarter spoiled
any hopes of a Carolina comeback as 13th ranked Clemson
University downed an all-black clad USC team 22-13.
"I THINK the uniforms backfired," Tiger defensive tackle
Ray Brown said.''On a hot day like it was, everybody knows
that black draws heat. Black is for funerals. All we had to do
was bury the dead."
But many Clemson players praised the Carolina team.

CAROLINA HAD two chances in the fourth quarter to
:ore, but turnovers by sophomore quarterback Allen Mitchell
roved costly.
After driving to the Hemson seven-yard line, Mitchell rolld
right and threw im j the hands of defensive end Terence
lack, who returned the ball to the 17 with 5:30 left in the
ame.
"The man crossed behind me, and he (Mitchell) threw it
ight to me," said Mack, whose older brother Kevin plays
ullback for the Tigers.
Ford said, "I thought we were ahead by only eight points
nd thought they could score, go for two and win the game."
THE GAMECOCK defense held and after Dale Hatcher's
mnt, USC took over at the Tiger 41.
But after two incomplete passes, Mitchell fumbled the snap,
nd Brown pounced on the ball at the 39-yard line with 3:03
:ft in the game.
From there, the Tigers ran out the clock.
"It was a heck of a game." USC head coach Joe Morrison
aid. "They played well, and we played well, it was a good
md exciting ballgame.
"WE WERE concerned about turning the ball over coming
nto the game. That has plagued us all year long, and it did
oday.
"The late interception hurt. If we could have taken it in and
nade it 22-20 with five minutes or so left to play, anything
:ould have happened.
"We got into a position to win, but didn't take advantage of
t. But it didn't happen, and that was it."
Mitchell threw for 121 of Carolina's 179 passing yards.
