"This celebration of the professional and personal
achievements of black Carolina graduates and faculty is particularly

chairperson of the centennial celebration.

Members of the Caucus who helped arrange the centennial
exhibit including Brown will be at McKissick Museums from
10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday to greet the public. The exhibit will be
open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Greener, whose life is the focal point of the exhibit, was the
first black to graduate from Harvard. In 1873, he again made
history when he became the first black faculty member at
USC, a position he held until 1877 when the S.C. legislature
closed the university to blacks.
HIRED AS a professor of mental and moral philosophy
and logic, Greener also taught Latin, Greek, mathematics and
constitutional history, and served as librarian for a time. In
1876 he was one of nine students to complete a degree in law at
the university, a move that shaped his future career.
In 1877, Greener went to Howard University as an instructor
and later dean of the school's law department. In 1880, he
gave up his deanship to become a law clerk in the office of the
first comptroller of the U.S. Treasury. Two years later he
