News Service guilty on all 46 counts of distributing obscene
magazines in Horry County convenience stores.
Jurors in the pornography trial deliberated seven hours and
40 minutes before reaching a verdict shortly before 6 p.m.
Circuit Judge Ralph Anderson fined the Florence company
a total of $46,000 or $1,000 for each count.
Solicitor Jim Dunn said he brought the case to trial because
of numerous complaints by citizens in Horry County.
The managers of 30 Horry County convenience stores that
sold the magazines can enter a plea of nolo contendere, or no
defense and no admission of guilt, to a similar charge of
distributing obscene material with store owners paying the
nnes, uunn saia.
Conway police Lt. John Hipskind said the magazines
already have been pulled from the shelves of stores in the
county. Defense attorney Walter Bilbrow of Charleston said
he does not know what Pee Dee News Service will do with the
stock of magazines declared obscene.
Anderson called the decision of the jurors one of "major
importance" in terms of other obscenity cases in South
Carolina.

NEW YORK (AP) - If they peer closely through the windows
of the train into the dimly lit tunnels, riders on many of New
York's subway lines can glimpse the ghostly outline of abandoned
subway stations.
Although many people are not even aware the stations existed,
those stops once bustled with activity.
The stations were originally built close together to accommodate
five-car trains. But in the 1940s, the platforms were
lengthened to handle 10-car trains. Since the longer platforms
would have resulted in one continuous station, in some instances
various stations along the line were closed.
Among the stations is the City Hall station on the IRT Lexington
Avenue line, which in 1904 became New York's first
subway stop.

Pelicans no longer endange
MIAMI (AP) ? The sight of brown pelicans along
Florida's coast has become so common the federal government
has recommended the birds be removed in several states
from the Endangered Species List.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Friday recommended 13
years of special protection for pelicans in Florida, the
Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama be discontinued.

may take a year because public comment first must be invited.
A hearing also could be conducted.

Being removed from the Endangered Species List won't
make much difference to Florida birds, the largest pelican
population in the nation estimated at between 18,000 and
20,000. The only change will be the pelican won't have to be
considered in planning federal projects that might affect it,
said Judy Jacobs, a wildlife service biologist.

pelicans from the list doesn't mean they have a secure future.
New chemicals about which little is known could easily appear
in the environment to threaten the birds, he said. Increasing
development of coastal areas also will reduce their habitat.
