But for sports writer Sarah Freligh, the controversy was just
beginning.
Freligh, a 1981 USC graduate, was denied access to the

after the Oct. 15 contest.
"IT WAS because I was a woman," Freligh told the

gave me an explanation as to why they wouldn't."

"We are the largest newspaper that covers their games on a
regular basis," said Freligh, who majored in mass communications.
"I wasn't getting a fair shot at the quotes that
other newspaper writers were getting. All I was getting were
the quotes that the sports information people would print up,
and those are not very good."
Freligh said she took her problem to her managing editor

"THE NEWSPAPER wanted equal access," Forman said.
"Sarah had a 6:45 p.m. deadline, and it was getting difficult
for her to get her stories in on time with the way they had their
system worked."
After Penn State head coach Joe Paterno heard about the
complaint, he decided to close his team's locker room to all
reporters.
"Basically coach Paterno changed his policy because of the
players'right of privacy," Baker said. "Now we just have interviews
in a room separate from the dressing room."
Paterno had no comment on the situation.

right to change its policy.
"A school sets their own interview policy," Wilson said.
"The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)
recommended that an interview room be set up for women
reporters, and most schools have complied."
Forman had threatened to take legal action after the
incident.
"We told Baker that the paper might take civil action
against them. We were going to base our case on the New
