press confidentii
By Marisa Porto
Members of the press should not be forced
to divulge identity of confidential sources,
the Athenian Literary and Debating Society
decided Wednesday.
"The press spreads itself thin over society.
It is highly unlikely that the press has any information
that the CIA does not have," said
Ann Farmer, who opposed the opening
speech advocating divulgence. "A reporter is
not an average citizcn."
Farmer said freedom of the press protects
the natural rights of all U.S. citizens.
Reporters can be harrassed by authorities
although some may help bring criminals to
justice, she said.
"There is a gentleman's agreement between
a reporter and his source. We have to
protect that freedom" Farmer said. "If we
allow this to happen, where would it end?
The journalism profession does as much as it
can to protect itself. The individual reporter
must choose between his morals and ethics."
Athenian member Shaun Mohle began the
debate by questioning the freedom of the
press and mentioning the restrictions placed
upon many guaranteed constitutional rights.
"Restrictions currently exist on freedom
of the press. Freedom of the press is not a

right in and cf itself. We are not putting the
press above the U.S. judicial system. If the
press is above the law in divulging sources, it
would be above the law in all cases. In
America, the bottom line is always dollars I
and cents. There are competing interests in
society," Mohle said.
Rebuttals presented by both sides were
based on constitutional amendments, public
safety and the U.S. legal system.
Athenian moderator Jack Hamilton addressed
Mohle's "four-piank plan" against
the suppression of press sources. It is possible
to harrass anyone, Hamilton said "This,
as any legal system, is inherently subjective."
Mark Newman countered this argument by *
suggesting the press lacked responsibility and "
should not have the right to be watchdog for
the government.
"Journalism is a good thing, but we afe
taking it into the profit area. The news
business is for profit. When circulation falls,
sensationalism takes over. There are cases
where all confidential relationships should be
kept open," Newman said.
With seven abstentions, the debate ended
with a 10-7 vote against the mandatory
divulgence ot press information.
