USC to sponsor
conference on
U.S. industry strategy

Major trends in the global man-made fibers industry and
strategies to make the U.S. industry more competitve will be
discussed Nov. 15 at a conference sponsored by USC.
The "Executive Conference on the U.S. Man-Made Fibers
Industry; Global Challenges and Strategies for the Future"
will be conducted from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Daniel
Management Center on the eighth floor of the Close Building.
This conference is the result of the second one-year study
directed by the USC Center for Industry Policy and Strategy.
The first, completed in 1982, analyzed the textile industrv.

national business professor, led an international team of
researchers that examined the industry's changes in production
and consumption, international trade and investment,
technology, U.S. and foreign government policies and corporate
strategies of major U.S., European and Japanese manmade
fiber firms.
Several U.S. government and business representatives will
speak at the conferece, including Walter Lenaham, deputy
assistant secretary for textiles and apparel, Department of
Commerce; Gerald Elden, president of Hoechst Fiber Industries
Inc. and chairman of the Man-Made Fibers Producers
Association; Robert Eisen, president of Greenwood Mills
Marketing Co.; and Stig Kry, chairman of the board of Kurt I
Salmon Associates Inc. I

The troops stationed in the Lebanese capital need to have
specific orders. They can't pull out of the area now, he said.
International studies senior Debbie Conway also said the
U.S. should stay in Lebanon. "We've gotten into a can of
worms, and we can't pull out now.
"I'M NOT real surprised (at the bombing). I'm upset that
they're sending more troops over there, but we can't leave.
And we can't go to war because we really can't identify the
enemy. We can't leave ? that would lead to total chaos."
Although many students see the need in keeping Marines
posted in Lebanon, many are upset no objectives have been
set for the soldiers.
Criminal justice junior Terry Alford said, "It's senseless for
all those Marines to be over there with no purpose. If we don't
have an objective, we should pull out."
