A chemical reaction turned out differently
than a graduate student thought it would,
and the unexpected result was a small explosion
in the Physical Science Center Oct. 18.
The blast occurred in room 717 of the

The building was not evacuated after
the 11:48 a.m. blast.
One man was slightly injured from flying
glass and was taken to the Student Health
Center and then to an area hospital.

A student cooking activated the fire alarm
at 2:38 a.m. Thursday. Saturday afternoon
at 12:22 p.m., the building was evacuated
again after a student cooking again set off
the alarm.
Identical circumstances surrounded Sunday
afternoon's evacuation of the dorm at 3
p.m., according to police reports.
Over the Dast two weeks. Woodrow has
been evacuated four times after a student accidentally
set off the alarm while cooking.
Five Columbia Fire Department vehicles and
three USC police cars have responded to the
call on each occasion.
Woodrow is always evacuated when the
fire alarm goes off because of the large
number of handicapped persons who live in
the building, police said. The average time
