The Gamecocks will try to make several comebacks in
tomorrow night's football game against the Louisiana State
Fighting Tigers.
Last year, USC was defeated by the Tigers 14-6 in Baton
Rouge. The Gamecocks will also try to come back after a week
off and after losing to Notre Dame 30-6 on Oct. 8.
The 7:30 p.m. contest will be televised live by WOLO. Last
year's game set a Tiger stadium record attendance of 78,944.
LSU, WHO last year posted an 8-3-1 record and an invitation
to the Orange Bowl, is 2-4 for the season after losing last
week to Kentucky.
Last week's open date came at an opportune moment for
the Gamecocks. USC head football coach Joe Morrison said,
"I've never been a big fan of the open dale but I would have to
say this one came at a good time for our ball club. We have
number of little bumps and bruises and we needed the time to
get everyone back in good health."
lsu neaci coacn jerry stovall said his Tigers' "running
game has not been very productive," but their "passing game
has been good."
Stovall cites the loss of experienced players to explain the
Tigers' 2-4 record but claims that his "defense is maturing
rapidly." Stovall said he thought that his entire team was
"getting better" and his "young players are really producing
for us."
MORRISON SAID of the Tigers, "Once again we are playing
another team with a tremendous tradition, winning attitude
and record." LSU leads the series with the Gamecocks
10-: .
Stovall got his start in coaching at Carolina in 1972 as an
assistant coach under Paul Dietze). LSU assistant head coach
and defensive line coach Pete Jer.kins coached at Carolina as
an assistant in 1973-74.
LSU will line up in the I formation on offense but will look
to throw the ball often. Stovall calls Eric Martin, a six-foot
one 20:-pound split end, "the finest wide receiver in the
Southeastern Conference."
On defense, the Tigers will use both odd and even man
fronts and will be "doing a lot of stunting," Morrison said.
Morrison also described their defense as "very quick."
**I WOULD compare them with Notre Dame from a defensive
point of view," Morrison said. Morrison also said he
thought LSU was like Notre Dame in that they were very
talented, yet not too successful.
Gamecock quarterback Alien Mitchell said, "We are going
to have a balanced attack on offense against LSU. We ran well
against Southern CaL but didn't throw well and we didn't do
either well against Notre Dame. We're going to have to do
both well against LSU to win."
