human tides flow in close contact. The
people seem somehow magnificently
oblivious to the danger.
1 have learned over the years to be
extremelv warv of larce crowds but I
never felt any apprehension in Chinese
.crowds. In the mass the Chinese are
uninterested in Westerners; individually
they are very friendly and helpful.
Old China. China is an ancient
civilization with a recorded history
dating back 4,000 years, but what so
beguiles the vistor are the parks and
palaces and temples and tombs that
date mostly from the Ming Dynasty
(1369-1644 A.D.).
A GREAT deal of old China can be
seen in and around Peking, starting
with the Forbidden City, a vast and
many-splendored walled city of courtyards
and gardens. There are 40 main
palaces and pavilions with enchanting
names like the Palace of Earthly Tranquility,
the Hall of Supreme Harmony,
the palace of Heavenly Purity, the Hall
of Mental Cultivation and, my
favorite, the palace of Accumulated
Elegance.
The whole seat of imperial majesty
was built mostly in the first two
decades of the 15th century, which architecturally
includes golden tile roofs,
upturned at the ends, under which are
highly decorated eaves in a riot of
Chinese reds, royal blues and dazzling
greens.
In the days of the emperors it was
considered a capital offense for a com
mon citizen or a foreigner to enter the
grounds. Now the Forbidden City is a
public museum with the old Imperial
Gardens open to everyone.
The palace itself is fantastic and has
more than 9,000 rooms and 15 layers
