From Staff Reports
Next fall, USC's football team will find
something strange underfoot.
USC athletic director Bob Marcurn announced
Friday during a meeting of the Intercollegiate
Activities Committee of the
board of trustees that the stadium floor will
be outfitted with grass.
The project, which is expected to cost from
$125,000 to $150,000, will get under way
following the Nov. 19 eame aeainst
Clemson.
Metro Conference commissioner Steve
Hatchell was introduced to the committee.
Hatchell, who recently left the associate commissioner's
position with the Big Eight Conference
for the Metro spot, said the April addition
of USC to the Metro was a major part
of his decision to accept the position.
4,I didn't give the job a second thought
when it came open," Hatchell said. "But my
attitude changed drastically when South
Carolina became a member.

Hatchell also said the addition of USC to
the conference was a smart move for the
future.
"I felt their addition was a solid move for
the future of the conference, and it therefore
was something I nperlpd fn takp a lr*r?k at "
Hatchell said. "I considered it like adding a
Nebraska or Oklahoma to the Big Eight
(Conference). It adds that kind of stability to
the league."
Hatchell then told the committee of the
Metro's move to Atlanta from St. Louis,
which he said should be in business by Nov.

"We feel that we'll be better able to serve
the conference in a centrally located area."
