the USC medical school's new campus praised
the school for its academic programs and
service to the state.
Lt. Gov. Mike Daniel, speaking at a Friday
afternoon ceremony on the campus's
front lawn, called the opening a "very special
occasion in the historv r>f the nniversitv anrl
in the life of South Carolina."
The new facilities are located in four
renovated and two new buildings at the Dorn
Veterans Administration Hospital on
Garners Ferry Road.
THE $18 million project was financed with
a grant from the Veterans Administration.
The buildings are leased to USC free.
The approximately 225,000-square-feet
facility includes classrooms, teaching and
research laboratories, the medical library, offices,
computer facilities, a medical
bookstore and medical illustration and
photography facilities.
Nine school of medicine departments are
housed at the new campus, six have offices
there and at Columbia area-hospitals, and
two departments are housed fully at
Richland Memorial Hospital.
Daniel said the medical school is "an excellent
example of the kind of federal and
state partnership that is needed to address the
needs of South Carolinians."
DANIEL COMMENDED USC officials."In
South Carolina, we have struggled
for a decade to build a sound medical
education institution here at the university,
and I am proud of this commitment and the
the extraordinary effort you have made to
provide and maintain an excellent academic
program."

Budget priorities are misplaced in governm

Speaking at a banquet celebrating the dedi<

budget-making season for advocating the increz
NIH to $22 million, what he called "peanuts.1

In the 1970s, controversy surrounded the
medical school, as opponents argued the HNftK
state didn't need another medical school in ji
addition to the Medical University of South
Carolina in Charleston.
"This school was built to teach and to gl|
serve. It's needed now more than ever, and it 11 ;
will be needed in the future," Daniel said.
"I firmly believe that a sound medical care ME g
system is the greatest social program South 11 gj
Carolina can have." 1
MARTHA PHILLIPS, a VA official who M ^
administered the grant, said the program has
worked well in brineine together VA
hospitals and medical schools, and in "turn- H:
ing an old soldiers' home into modern
hospitals." ^ a
Dr. O'Neal Humphries, acting dean of the I -n
medical school, called the facilities "one of ?
the best medical campuses in the nation or
for that matter, in the world." 1
He said the school recently held the International
Society of Cardiovascular Research,
where 185 famous scientists exchanged recent i
research information. |
He spoke about outreach programs the S
school has established. These include alcohol H
and drug abuse and genetic counseling pro- BV
grams, a program to treat depressed
children, and a residency training program
on preventing illnesses.
HUMPHRIES MENTIONED the medical
school's pos;t'on in the university.
"As the university moves to excellence in
higher education with the emphasis on I
graduate training at the Columbia campus, it
is inconceivable that the full promise of a
graduate institution could be accomplished
without a productive, excellent medical ^
school. , ? See
