DIFFERENCE^ IN jumping
distances between intercollegiate and
national tournaments are attributed to
smaller approach ramps and slower
'boat speeds at the college level. In national
competition, the swiftness of the
boat is 35 mph and the ramp is fiveand-a-half
feet in length, whereas the
college boat is limited to 32 mph and
the takeoff ramp is one-half foot
shorter, thus substantially reducing the
span of the jumps.

intercollegiate competitions take place
during the colder winter months when
muscles are more likely to contract,
thereby posing more possibility for injury
while the jump is in progress, Cordina

father put him on his first pair of skis.
Now, at the age of 24, he teaches
others the fundamentals of water skiing
at the Sammy Duvall Ski School,
as well as having competed in more
than 40 tournaments. Duvall is a world
water-ski champion.
The great thrill of pitting man
against nature in the free-flying adventure
of ski jumping is what Cordina
said keeps him to his stringent practice
schedule. He describes ski jumping as
similar to being shot out of a cannon
across the water and soaring 40 feet up
into the air on his way to the "best
natural high."
FUTURE PLANS for Cordina in
