Reagan to visit USC,
TV station reports
Fran Stiff and Wire Reports
President Ronald Reagan will include USC in a visit to
Columbia Tuesday, and will probably receive an honorary
degree, a Columbia television station reported yesterday.
"Political insiders expect the university to award the
president an honorary degree/* W1S-TV reported.
i ne Associated Kress quoted Republican Party officials
as saying the president's visit is on behalf of Sen. Strom
Thurmond, R-S.C., and that he will attend a fund-raising
dinner at the State Fairground's Cantey building.
John Courson, the state GOP's national committeeman
and Thurmond associate, said the trip should generate
more than $200,000 in one night for the senator's reelection
campaign.
The 81-year-old senator hasn't announced a re-election
bid, but says he will campaign as if facing significant
Democratic opposition.
Warren Tompkins, state party executive director, said
organizers expect to sen more tnan z.uuu tickets, at 3>ioo,
$200 and $500, for the dinner. It is tentatively set for 6:30
p.m., he said.
The president is tentatively scheduled to arrive in Colum bia
about 4 p.m. to attend two private receptions for Thurmond,
the AP reported.
The White House gave no official confirmation on
Reagan's visit on Monday.
USC officials will announce details of the visit today, Information
Services Director Hans Knoop told the
Gamecock last night.

"It was not due to be completed in
