I Daring new h reflect music iBy Margarita Pate With each new music craze, the fashion industry changes as well, especially hair styles. When the Beatles shocked society with their long hair, every fan under the age of 30 grew their hair down to their cars. Even earlier, the greased back ducktails of the 1950s swept the country. Rut rjprharx; the most nonular and longest ilasting fashion introduced during the rock 'n' roll era was long, free flowing hair for both men and women. NOW WE have "New Wave" and "Punk Rock," and a new fashion for the 80s. The look is short, asymmetrical cut with a flair of colors. A simple blunt cut might have a twoinch wide band of pink on one side of the head. A popular style is cutting the hair very close to the head except for one long, thin clump of hair about 5-6 inches long left hanging from the nape of the nect. Uneveness is the key to many of the new styles. One style very popular in Europe is the hair cut straight across at the ear on one side, and the down to the neck on the other side. This style is known as a "linear" cut. Another look is short-short hair combined with sections of long hair. It signals contrast and discontinuity. hainiis akk popuiai anu tan iji ngiu anu SffiH full of volume or cut short and combed 1 straight up. The side of his hair are brushed straight up. To keep these sculpted styles together, gels are back. Remember "Dippity-Do?" Well, today's gels give great control for the "spiky" look, or that slicked down look. Perming hair is also making a comeback. "Touch perms" or "skip perms" give a finished style that flows. These perms are easy to do and allow great versatility with each style. THE "CLIQUE" originated in the 60s, is a lot of short hair that swirls in all directions. It's full around the top of the face and cut very short around the ears and around the neck. Another style making a splash is the "Lulu," short style made popular by silent film star Louise Brooks. It's a versatile style that can be sophisticated, businesslike or very chic. It can be designed just for your face shape and bone structure with the emphasis on the cheekbones. Some of the new looks in Men's hair fashions are derived from the 1920s and 30s. Short over the ears with fullness, control and neat lines. The wind-swept look is out. Effortless eleeance is in. Even the longer stvles are emphasizing neatness. HH * lngl gg ^|PIPP^^ ;?? Hollister Remember when Rubik's Cubes came out? Almost everywhere you went you would find someone twisting and turning the little colored squares until they threw it up against a wall in anger. I was a victim myself, but now I've found something better. Rita Aero and Elliot Weiner have come out with a book called "The Brain Game." This book includes 27 intelligence tests that will captivate you for hours and leave you climbing the walls. Bound in spiral binds, these tests can be ripped out or left in. I took "The Brain Game" home in hopes that it would relax me and make me forget school for a while - but I couldn't put it down. "THE BRAIN Game" is divided into four chapters. The introduction is an IQ test - I had not taken one since high school. The chapters are divided into sections dealing with different parts of the brain. Chapter 1 focuses on the left hemisphere, which is oriented toward verbal and analytical understanding. Most of the tests are concerned with mathematics and vocabulary. For each test there is an introduction, and once you have determined your score, there is an "interpretation" on how well or poorly you did. And for those who are interested enough, there's also a list of explanatory answers. Chapter 2 concentrates on the right hemisphere, which controls our knowledge of visual and intuitive understanding. This section consists of such tests as "Art Judgment," in which you choose one of two reJjfgfe ^8P A Pregnane # abortion " All meth ? VD. Chapter 3 deals with Software, our ability to analyze presented information or ideas and expressing them in an effective fashion. Most of these tests are verbal tests. i THE LAST chapter deals with Hardware, which controls our ability in memory and r#?rnonitir?n This section has several tests i that seem easy at first glance, but they're not. The "Recall of Observation" test consists of questions relating to simple things. But, here's an example: What two letters of the alphabet do not appear on a telephone dial? (Answer: Q and Z) And here's and example from the 'Memory Recognition' test: Who was convicted of killing eight nurses in Chicago in 1966? a. Miranda b. no one - suspect was never found c. Speck d. no one - suspect was acquitted. e. Starkweather f. Desolvo (Answer: In 1967 Richard Speck was found guilty) MOST OF the tests in this booklet are unlike most typical 'run-of-the-mill' aptitude tests. These are fun, yet challenging. If you're planning to take the Graduate Record Exam in the future, you might find this book helpful. Some of the test are similar to those on the GRE. And then again, there are a lot of tests that are unique. 'The Brain Game" gives you a chance to challenge yourself on your own time so you learn while having fun. f r?AT T\TA A WLliNA WWIVIJL^IN J | CLINIC J ; y testing by urine or blood A Counseling and Services with free medications ods of birth control: Pill, IUD, Diaphragm available pes testing and treatment k and other female problems g icts strictly confidential, we care about you ?
