Not many bands can rebound after a bitter
breakup, but Altered Images has done just
that with their third LP, "Bite."
Hailing from Scotland, the group had enjoyed
both popular and critical acclaim for
its first two records, but internal disputes
caused a parting of the ways.
Their third album, "Altered Images,"
fronted by vocalist Clare Grogan, marks
their return to the music industry. "Bite" is
an album that could bring renewed success to
the group, and this success would be largel>
because of Grogan's distinctive vocals.
ALTHOUGH THE lead vocal tracks
sound as if they have been electronically
altered, this is not the case. The power and
range of Grogan's voice allow her to scream
out the high notes while still blending with
the instruments and backing vocals.
The lead and backing vocals remind the
listener of strains of many 60s female groups
such as Diana Ross and the Supremes. This is
especially evident in "Change of Heart," 2
track on the second side of "Bite."
The title is representative of the mair
theme of the record ? the pain caused by un
controllable emotions, the "bite" of love.
The lyrics, whether happy or sad, indicat<
that we have no reign over the powers of th<
heart, as in "Thinking About You ":"I tol(

Could I be what I want to be
And just see who I want to see
You'd tell the secret but not
The truth ... to me.
Because of the raw, straining power of her
voice, Grogan is well suited to singing about
the pain of love.
Each of the eight songs on the album has a
mixture of synthesized rhythms and acoustic
i drums that allows the material to rise above
i the average "electronic music" of today.
, Each tune is rhythmically powerful, with
r guitar, bass and drums driving the beat while
the keyboards and vocals carry the melody.
The bass work on the album is especially
good.
Because the band is relatively new, Altered
