USC lures Canai
By Tr8cy Mixson
To some Americans, Canada is known for its reliable
Mounties, cold beer and hard-nosed hockey. But volleyball?
Maybe not, but USC volleyball coach Elaine Mozingo said
she believes people will turn out to see Carolina freshman x
Lori-Anne Rowe, an All-Canadian volleyball player from
Montreal.
Rowe was offered a volleyball scholarship to USC, but at
the same time was named to the Canadian Senior National
Team, which began its season in the fall"of 1983.
"I must have changed my mind about 20 times," she said of
th*? Hprisirtn "It had alwnvs hepn mv Hrpnm tr* nlav for fhp na.
tional team. But then again I wanted a scholarship to a school
where I could get an education as well as play ball."
Rowe's final decision was to play for USC, despite the
pressure to remain in Canada. "My parents were a great help
in making my decision," she said. "They were supportive the
whole time and were thrilled when I chose to go to school. My
father is in business, so they were happy about my choosing to
major in business administration."
Although she said she misses her country, she doesn't regret
her decision to leave because Canada is "lackine so much in
sports programs and funds. Because of this, they lose many
athletes to other countries."
The 5-9 freshman said she enjoys the American South, as
well as the university. "I like the way everyone says 'y'all'"
she said, adding, "the emphasis 011 sports down here really
amazes me.
"When I arrived at the airport 1 saw this sign 'Home of the
Fighting Gamecocks,' and I couldn't believe it. The city and
the students give the school so much support. It's great!"

"We're reallv luckv to have Lori." Mozineo said. "She's
outstanding. I've never seen a player on this coast of her
caliber. She's going to be fun to watch, and people will come
to see her play."
Rowe said she has mutual respect for her coach. "She
knows what she's doing, and she's determined to win. We still
have a lot of work to do, but we have potential, and coach
Mozingo will bring it out."
Mozingo was responsible for recruiting Rowe earlier this
year after she participated in the Canada Games, an allsporting
event sponsored every four years.
Several of Rowe's USC teammates also said they're impressed
by her abilities. "She's so knowledgeable and skilled
that you get the feeling whatever she does is right," junior
Shelly Raptis said.

"Just by watching her you can learn more about the
game," Montoya said. Higgins said, "Lori really wants
everybody to do her best."
Raptis, Montoya and Higgins were recruited by Mozingo as
transfer students from Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale,
Ariz.
Rowe became interested in volleyball at a French school in
Quebec when she was 14. "At first I had really rotten skills,
and it took a lot of work to get better," she said. "But I was
told I had potential when I went to the regional and then provincial
(similar to state) tryout camps, so I kept working."
Among her recent accomplishments, Rowe was named AllCanadian
Juvenile in 1982, and then All-Canadian Junior
earlier this year before being named to the Senior National
