downs Korea
From Wire Reports
President Ronald Reagan ordered ii
Secretary of State George Shultz to demand
"an immediate and full account" from the a
Soviet Union for its downing of an unarmed
South Korean jumbo jet carrying 269 people, a
including a Georgia congressman. a
In South Carolina, the congressional
delegation called the attack 'outrageous and c
indefensible," "a caveman tactic" and "a r
calculated act of agression." s
Meanwhile, the Soviet Union said yesterday
that the "unidentified aircraft" twice c
violated Soviet airspace over Sakhalin Island j
and that Soviet fighters "were sent aloft" to
try to help it land. ,
THE BRIEF report on the official Tass I
news agency said the plane ignored "signals i
and warnings" from the fighters and "continued
its flight in the direction of the Sea of
Japan."
The report made no reference to the plane
being a Korean Air Lines jet that the U.S.
government said was shot down by a Soviet
fighter over Sakhalin.
Presidential spokesman Larry Speakes,
briefing reporters on the West Coast, where
Reagan is vacationing, said, "There are no
circumstances that can justify the unprecedented
attack on an unarmed civilian
aircraft."
THE INCIDENTseemed to anger South
Carolina's congressional delegation.
Rep. Tommy Hartnett, R-S.C., said, "Attacking
an unarmed civilian plane is like attacking

Thirty Americans were on board the flight,
ncluding two South Carolina men.
Rep. Carrol Campbell, R-S.C., said the
ict was made worse since the Soviet pilots
'knew in advance that this was a civilian
tirliner and that it was not military threat
ind still then they shot it out of the air."
"THIS IS absolutely nothing more than a
:alculated act of agression. I hope everybody
ecognizes that there is no excuse for
hooting this plane."
Rep. Butler Derrick, D-S.C., said no
:ivilized country does such an act and called
for economic sanctions.
"The deaths of the Americans will haunt
Dur relationship with Russia for a long time
to come. It was totally uncalled for. We must
demand a full accounting and a full apology
for this vicious act," Derrick said.

SEN. ERNEST Hollings said, "There's no

kind. It tells you something about the
Soviets. You're dealing with a hard-core
