Officers have weird weekend
ATLANTA (AP) ? They weren't exactly snakebit, t
Atlanta police officers got tangled in some weird happenir
during the weekend.
One incident involved a snake spotted in the middle ol
road. Four officers who went to the scene decided the sna
probably was poisonous and they would kill it by running o>

While officer Barbara Self, 27, was directing traffic arou
the snake, she was struck by another vehicle, suffering mir
injuries.
Two other officers, parked on the southeast side of the c
spotted a nude man riding on the hood of a car being driven
his wife. The car was stopped, and the living hood ornam<
charged with public indecency.
Early Saturday, officers questioned a nightclub patron w
became unruly, pounded dents in the roof of their pat
car and smashed the flashing blue light.
And finally, a young woman flagged down two officers

'Fake' cake exhibit held
LOUISVILLE, KY. (AP) ? Mouth-watering cakes a
molded sugar creations being displayed at a convention w
pretty to look at, but anyone hazarding a sample may have I
ten off more than he could chew.
Among the nearly 1,000 creations shown in the sugar-ai
meringue world of cake-decorating convention during
weekend were a violet orchid, dainty in appearance but sc
in substance. It was made of dried sugar and tragacanth.
nearby wedding cake was made of styrofoam.
Real cake would crumble and go stale, said Brenda He
ington of Paris, Ky., who is president of the Internatio
Cake Explorated Society.
More than 1,500 professional and amateur cake decorat*
from the 50 states and several foreign countries participated
workshops and exhibited cakes that most had decorated
home and hauled to the annual convention in the trunks
cars or on their laps in airplanes, she said.
"I think the heat affected us more than our cakes," Ha
ington said as temperatures rose into the 90s.
She said a few of the exhibits were a bit runny.
"There's chocolate that is used out there (in the displays
she said, "and there's nothing you can do about
chocolates."

Willis died when she was run over by
a car during the initiation.
She was riding on the hood of a car
that braked, tossing her into the path
of the vehicle, authorities said. Her
head was crushed when the car rolled
over her.
"It was a freak accident, that's all,"
said Darlington Police Chief Roy
Williams. But Darlington County Coroner
Eldridge Norton said he may call
for an inquest.
Williams said Willis was with about
a dozen girls in two cars at the time of
the accident. The mishap occured after
the group of freshmen had gone
through the ritual of having eggs and
syrup poured onto their hair.

freshmen were taken to a private swimming
pool where some of them washed ,
up, the chief said.
They got back into the cars and apparently
were heading to a friend's
house or a cabin in the Black C eek
area when the cars started sticking to
the little-used and unpaved Old Bridge
Road, Williams said.
Willis apparently was sitting on the
lead car, which braked when the rear
car began to get bogged down. The
coroner said she fell in front of the car
and was run over before the driver
could bring it to a complete stop.
She was pronounced dead at nearby ,
Wilson's Hospital, although officers I
said she died almost instantly from the 1
head injuries. I
