When Claude Vaughn retired from his job
with the Veterans Administration and started
volunteer work, he never thought that nine
years later he would be a full-time student at
USC and on the Dean's List.
During his involvement with the South

lived in the Philippines while working for the
VA sparked his desire to seek an
undergraduate degree in Government and International
Studies at USC.

Vaughn said of his educational experience at
the university.
He was 67 when he enrolled in USC's
Mature Students Program in the fall of 1981.
"I am convinced USC will bend over
backward to help older students," Vaughn
caiH "If vrvil arp ot oil timirl thpu will almnct
lead you around by the hand to make you
feel part of the university."
Both Vaughn and his wife, Mildred, will
share their university experiences with
students age 25 or older during an orientation
program for mature students today. The
program began at 8 a.m. in Ballroom C of
the USC Russell House University Union and
will feature a discussion panel of mature
students.
Vaughn attributes his success in his studies
to concentration, organization and constant
class attendance. "I doubt seriously that I

have missed more than six classes in two
years," he said.
At first, Vaughn felt some anxiety about
returning to a routine of quizzes and exams,
but a course for mature students called
"Reading for Successful Learning" offered
him a way to overcome his fears.
Another key ingredient to Vaughn's
academic enjoyment is his good relationship
with other students.
"They really accept the older students and
make you feel at home," he said.
"Sometimes I run into^ome of them at a
shopping center or a restaurant, and they'll
yell 'Hey, Claude,' and make a point of coming
over to talk to me."
Vaughn said he has enjoyed every professor
he has had, and said they have been
glad to discuss his course work with him.
"None of them has given me an ounce of an ?
edge over anybody else, though," he said,
"but that's the way it should be."
A native of Florida, Vaughn attended
Georgia Evening College, now Georgia State
University, in Atlanta. His education was in
terrupted by service in the U.S. Army during
World War II. After the war, he went to
work for the VA in Atlanta instead of continuing
his education.
The Vaughns have three children: Claude
Jr., Nancy and Carol. All have degrees from
use.
His wife, who teaches fifth grade at Burnside
Elementary School in Columbia, earned
her master's from Carolina in 1975. This
