Proposed alcohol la By Glenn Burkins USC students will have new rules governing the use of alcohol if a bill in the General Assembly passes, said James McMahon, director of Resident Student Development. Several bills are in the state Legislature that would raise the minimum drinking age. Under one bill, the minimum age ttfmiM KA raica/4 #/\ 1 1 A i?I/>?I1/4 roJnA AAA 10 tt v/uiu uv a uiovu iv.' ^a. nuiuiiiu vvvjuiu inw iu 17 111c first year, then progress to 21 during the next two years. If the age is raised to 21, McMahon said, USC will probably make it illegal to possess alcohol on campus. However, if the age is raised to 19, he said enforcement becomes more complicated. All social gatherings would be monitored to ensure tnat no one under age drinks beer or wine, he said. Danny Baker, assistant vice president for Law Enforcement and Safety, said it may become necessary to have spot checks of students on campus to enforce the law. "Becaus there is nothing else to do, to reduce tension and because the don't feel they are relaxed until they have had a drink." He said the greatest problem would be with the 18-year-oli students for whom drinking will be illegal if the legislatioi passes. k WOMEN'S I GRA] INIC Have vou receive ING or HEALTH 1 Services ted before missing period cd at USC? Two open container bills are also in the Legislature, Dorton i said. One would make it illegal to have an open alcoholic e beverage in any motor vehicle. He said he thinks this bill will not pass because it would outlaw having an open container in e campers and parked cars. y The other bill would make it illegal for the driver to have an open container and would not apply to parked cars, d Another bill is aimed at bartenders and distributors. It ii would make them responsible for damages caused to or by one of their patrons. DUATING SENIORS II :d a NATIONAL DIRECT (NDSL), NURS- ' [ PROFESSION Student Loan while enroll* t r?
