Tennis team closes

season wim o-o win
By Jeff Rogers
USC's men's tennis team closed out its 1982-83 season Friday
with a 7-2 win over East Tennessee State University.
The victory gave Carolina a 21-8 record for the season and a
possible National Invitational Tournament tennis bid. fcisu
dropped to 22-12.
"I think we will get invited," USC Assistant Coach Dru
Kefalos said. "Clemson was our last shot for a regional bid to
the NCAAs, and when we lost to them, our chances were
wiped out."
The NIT tournament is structured like the National Col1

include the Nos. 16-32 schools in the nation, Kefalos said.
If invited, USC will begin NIT play May 16 in Baton Rouge,
La.
USC lost the first sets in a doubles match and in two singles
matches Friday, but won the second and third sets to seal the
victory.
Carolina's USC's Zoran Petkovic defeated Jamie Miller at

defeated ETSU's Bryan Woodward in another three-set
match, 6-7, 6-0, 6-0.
The Gamecocks' Ed Filer, Moe Kruger and Marler Beebe
(fourth, fifth and sixth seeds, respectively) defeated their opponents
in straight sets. Filer beat Greg Dellinger 6-4, 6-3,
Kruger beat Norm White 6-0, 6-2 and Beebe beat Jen layior
6-1, 6-3.
USC's singles loss came at the No. 3 position, when Sterling
Cooke lost to John Howerton 5-7, 3-6.
Freshmen Arthur Heller and Richard Ashby, who usually
play singles, only played doubles Friday. They defeated Miller
and Woodward 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. USC lost the No. 2 doubles,
when Howerton and Dellinger defeated Beebe and Craig Harmon
6-1, 6-3.
Wink Coleman and Greg Macko won the No. 3 doubles for
USC, defeating White and Dave Green 6-4, 6-2.
If USC competes in the NIT, the team will be without No. 1
player Petkovic. He is scheduled to return to Yugoslavia to
play Davis Cup matches for his native country May 4.
Petkovic, who finished the year with a 19-8 record, said his
performance this year was "better than last year.
"I wasn't very consistent," Petkovic said. "One day 1
would play well, and the next day I would be tired. Playing on
hard courts is really tough on the body."
Petkovic said he would get more experience on hard courts
during the summer by playing in the Bulgarian circuit.
Kefalos said the Gamecocks had a "pretty good year.
"With a young team, it takes a while to gain experience, and
we had four freshmen playing in singles positions. Richard
Ashby (21-6) and Arthur Heller (20-5) were the most consistent
for us."
USC signed three high school seniors for the 1983-84
season, Kefalos said. Connecticut's Brian Parker, Maryland's
David Tremain and Georgia's Mark Avedikian will play next
year.
"Parker is a top player in the East," Kefalos said,
