Philosophy symposium ? scheduled for weekend By Catherine Womack This weekend's philosophy symposium on David Hume should be of interest to almost everyone, according to a USC i philosophy professor. Professor James Oliver said Hume's philosophy affects the > disciplines of literature, psychology, political science and history. "Anyone with a general interest in understanding Western } civilization should be interested in the philosophy of David Hume," Oliver said. In addition to his philosophical writings, Hume (1711-1776) was a noted historian and essayist. The Department of Philosophy offers an annual symposium r - ior enricning its major programs. This year the department selected Hume as the topic because "it's about time for Hume," Foster Tait, a USC philosophy professor, said. Four papers will be read at the symposium, which starts Friday. After an introduction by Dean Chester Bain of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Oklahoma professor John Biro will present a paper entitled "The New Science of Man: Some Lessons from Hume." Biro is a fellow at the Centre for Cognitive Science at the University of Western Ontario. Biro asserts that closer studies of Hume could help avoid current mistaken theories in cognitive science. USC philosophy professor Shandon DuBose will lead the 3 p.m. talk. nnnnM * -Uil ? ' "? Faculty and students from several USC departments as well as other Southeastern colleges and universities will attend the symposium, Oliver said. Hume is best known for skepticism in his philosophy.
