Chesley, a pioneer in the televising of Atlantic Coast Conference basketball games, died at his home on Grandfather Mountain Thursday. He was 69. Chesley had been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease in recent years and was bed-ridden since January, said Hugh Morton, owner of Grandfather Mountain. Chesley's television production company maintained the ACC package until two years ago when Metro Sports took over the telecast for one year. Chesley worked for the ABC Network for two years as coordinator of college football, later taking a similar job with the NBC network. He then began his own production company. MORTON SAID Chesley was a perfectionist, and Chesley's own comments in a 1981 newspaper interview supported him. ^1 1 iU A ^licsicy men aaiu uc gave ujj iwiwaoung ACC games with "great reluctance," but said several factors, including the cost, "made it impractical, not impossible, to continue television coverage in keeping the high professional standards I think are required. "We know we have done a good job, and we know we'd rather not do it at all if the conditions laid down by the conference would force us to diminish the quality ot tne product for the future," Chesley said. James said, "He had the uncanny ability to know what the public wanted and he just very skillfully worked this knowledge into his production." Morton said tentative arrangements include a memorial service at All Saints Episcopal Church in Linville Saturday with a private burial in Exton, Pa., which was unscheduled. | jji I wmsamsmm iMiffW Ji ;) ttC) >>>) itores. 1 |MW!Mte8i^88 IrewsRd.
