ComputerssL.
The machine's limited memory may be
its major drawback. Containing 600
words, the memory can store only a certain
amount of information before throwing
out the material at the beginning.
However, the user can control a scanner
to go further backward or forward
than the memory to solve the problem.
RAY KURZWEIL developed the
machine in 1974. At that point it could
read only the typeface on his personal
typewriter.
Thp mnrhine has advanced to read
multiple type faces, which Swope said is
"incredible."
Swope was offered the opportunity to
be USC's representative to learn the
machine and train others on it. "I was
really happy to do it," she said.
USCJ was one 01 zuu concges ana
universities that received the Kurzweil
machine as a gift from Xerox.
CRITERIA FOR RECEIVING the
machine were based on the number of
blind students in the school, the existence
of a blind student program at the school
and an accessible place to put the
machine.
USC has a room in the education area
of the library with a braille writer, some
braille material and a few cassettes. The
machine was placed in a room next door.
Included with the gift of the machine,
valued at $129,800, is free maintenance
i or one year ana training ai uuuuuusc
for staff members.
Four USC students have been selected
to learn the machine. Swope estimates it
will take about 10 hours for a blind person
to learn how to use it. She said training
will probably start in May.
