with Mom and Dad no longer around to turn
to can be a very frightening experience for
college freshmen. USC tries to avoid this,
however, with the Student Orientation
Program.
"It's unique that USC makes such a commitment,"
said Char Backman, coordinator
of the Student Orientation Office. "Apparently
USC has been the pioneer in
establishing a permanent orientation office.

that partially orient the student, or they
have no program at all, leaving the student
open for attack."
She said USC considers its incoming
students very important, however, and tries
to make their first days in college as pleasant
as possible. The Academic Division and the
Student Affairs Office united and instituted
the Student Orientation Program for this
purpose.
THE STUDENT Orientation Program is
composed of a group of 10 Student Orientation
Assistants, who work with new student?
in the summer. Though the monetary
benefits of being an SOA are small, the position
holds prestige, Beckman said.
Earlier in the spring, the Student Orientation
Office accepted about 100 applications
for the position of SOA. They narrowed the
number to the 10 best candidate., for the job.
"This is not an easy chore," Beckman said.
"We had to turn down a lot of people who

This weekend, those students met for a
training session. The meeting had two goals
? for the students to meet one another and
to prepare them for their summer job.
The students participated in such activities
as taking pictures around campus while
Dretendinc to be freshmen on ramnnc for trip
first time.
BESIDES SPENDING the first six weeks
of the summer at USC, the SOA must come
back early in the fall to help the freshmen as
they move in. Assistants also act as Peer Advisers
in the Student Affairs Office during
the course of the year and are periodically
asked to make presentations in University
101 classes offered in the fall.
The orientation assistant's job is not only
to serve freshmen, however. This year their
responsionities include working with a new
program that will help the systems transfer
student, one who is transferring within the
USC complex. In the future, the department
would like to create a program directed
specifically toward the international student.
Students have different reasons for becoming
involved. Michelle McManus, a junior
and second year SOA said, "It's a good time,
unlike a iob. and a tzreat wav tn mppt
friends."
Brad Anderson, a sophomore, said he
wanted to be an SOA because he felt he needed
to do somehting worthwhile this summer.
And according to sophomore Janet Abbazia,
"The experience far outweighs the financial
plus of having a summer job."
