The bank has endowed a chair of economics in the College of
Business Administration in honor of Dewey Johnson, W.W.
Johnson's father.
BOORSTIN RECEIVED his undergraduate degree with
highest honors from Harvard College and his doctorate from
Yale. As a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford,
England, he won a coveted "double first" in two degrees in
law and was admitted as a barrister-at-law of the Inner
Temple, London.
Boorstin is an active editor and author whose books have
won the Bancroft Prize, the Parkman Prize, the Dexter Prize
and the Pulitzer Prize for history.
Before becoming Librarian of Congress, Boorstin was
director of the National Museum of History and Technology
(1969-1973), and senior historian of the Smithsonian Institution
in Washington, D.C. Before that he was the Preston
and Sterling Morton Distinguished Servict ^rofessor of
History at the University of Chicago where he aught for 25
years.

An alumnus of Spartanburg High School and USC, Wardlaw
was a reporter for the Columbia Record and The
Associated Press in the 1930s. In 1938 he ioined the university.
where he served for many years in various positions, including
journalism instructor, news service director, sports
information director and as the first director of its University
Press. The press published several books under his direction
that gained national attention.
IN 1959, Wardlaw went to Texas to organize and direct the
University of Texas Press. He developed it into one of the
leading university presses in the nation, and more than 600

1974, he joined Texas A & M University to found and
develop a new press. When he retired in 1978 with the title of
director emeritus, it was a going concern with a rapidly
expanding list of scholarly and regional books.
For many years Wardlaw was active in the affairs of the
Association of American University Presses, serving two
terma as its president and leading in the development of its
international programs.
