SMARR SAID the key to beating Clemson
was winning the singles matches.
"I thought we played well, but the key was
to win three singles.
"Our effort was good, but we're going to
have to play well to beat Maryland."
The Gamecocks play the Terps tomorrow
at Sam Daniel Tennis Stadium, starting at 2
p.m.
SMARR AGREED with two of his players,
saying USC needed to beat Clemson to make
the NCAA playoffs.

"We've got two tough matches in a row with
Maryland and Georgia. Hopefully, we're
going to end the season on a winning note."
The Gamecocks travel to Georgia April

Smarr said the Gamecocks probably
would be invited to the National Invitational
Tournament for tennis but certain factors,

before the team accepted the bid.
LAST YEAR, the first year for a tennis
NIT, Smarr said he declined a bid to participate.
Raal said the Gamecocks did not have a
chance to go to the NCAA's. "Not after
today. If we had won today, we might have
had a chance."
Ashby also said he expected the team to
get an NIT bid. "I don't think we can go to
the NCAA's, but we have a real good shot at
fie NIT's."
He said he has improved over the season,
especially in his concentration.
"AT THE beginning of the season, ]
wasn't playing as mentally tough. M>
overall game has improved since fall a lot.
"We've had a couple of matches where w
didn't play up to our potential. Against
Wake Forest we played well as a team. Wc
