The No. 1 baseball team invades Sarge
Frye Field this weekend, and USC Head
Coach June Raines hopes his 19th-ranked
squad fares better than it did last year.
Ron Fraser's Miami Hurricanes, the
defending College World Series champs,
enter the three-game stand with a 38-9
record ? including wins over college
baseball notables Wichita State, Arizona
State and Maine.
Game time tonight is 7:30, with the series
continuing tomorrow and Sunday.
The Hurricanes defeated USC seven of
ei&ht games last vear. with threp of thosp
wins coming at Sarge Frye Field. Miami
outscored Carolina 43-20 last year during the
four-game stand.
"THIS IS A very important series for us,"
Raines said. "We've been playing well;
they've been playing well. And we like to
play Miami. Unfortunately, we didn't do
that well against them last year.''

start on the mound for the Gamecocks
tonight. The Charleston native has a 6-0
record and 3.40 earned run average.
Junior Gary Parmenter (6-0) will start for
USC tomorrow, and senior Mark Calvert (43)
will start Sunday afternoon. Parmenter
has a 3.35 ERA, while Calvert's is 3.06.
"Mike's been a good surprise for us,"
Raines said. "He's been the best thing all
year. He's confident and he's got a lot of
poise, which is good for a freshman."
* RAINES SAID defense will be one key to
having a successful series.
"We've got to get good defense, and
hopefully we'll continue to hit the ball. We
also need to have good pitching. If we can do
that, I'm sure we can come out in eood
O
shape.
"Ron (Fraser) likes for you to make the
mistakes. They'll bunt early, hit and run
and make sure to put the ball in play.
"They've also played a few more games
than we have.
