The amount of apathy on the USC
campus is appalling. In the past six
months, the university has eliminated
the undergraduate program of the
College of Education, threatened to
increase tuition by $500 and housing
fees by more than 17 percent, and
imposed a $25 surcharge on
graduating students.
The school's latest plans, released
late last week amid a flurry of conflicting
statements, call for the
elimination of the College of Criminal
Justice and the Department of Media
Arts.
Despite these extreme cutbacks,
there has been little outcry from the
student body. At the rally at the State
House last week, only 400 people
bothered to attend. In a university
with many more than 10,000 full-time
students, this is a poor showing.

Ashley Abel refused to protest the

At a board of trustees meeting concerning

defer to the judgment of USC
President James Holderman.
Although Abel's attempt at leading
a rally at the State House is commendable,
it does not compensate for
the students' lack of concern. The
small turnout at the State House has
done little to change the legislature's

The faculty caught the attention of the
media during the Faculty Senate

Although students may feel that
nothing can be done, more budget cuts
and fee increases are inevitable
unless the student body begins to take
the initiative by protesting the actions
of the Legislature, rather than simply
watching the university strangled for
lack of money.
