Quick starts were the key to the
Gamecocks' 61-53 victory over Georgia
Tech Wednesday night.
"They (Georgia Tech) are a competitive
team in the Atlantic Coast Conference, so it
was a big win for us," USC acting Head
Basketball Coach Steve Steinwpdpl
The Gamecocks, 16-7 for the season, broke
out to a 14-4 lead in the first half and never
trailed in the contest.
"ONE OF OUR goals is to take our opponents
out of the game in the first five
minutes of each game," Steinwedel said.
"We did a pretty good job of that."
Georgia Tech Head Coach Bobby Cremins
agreed with Steinwedel, saying, "USC took
us out of our tempo early.
"Getting a good start is really a key with
us," Cremins said.
Even without getting off to a good start,
Georgia Tech trailed by only five points at
the end of the first half. The Yellow Jackets
kept close by shooting 57.9 percent from the
floor, while USC shot 57.6 percent for the
first half.
USC STARTED the second half much like
the first, as Brad JLergenson, Kenny Holmes
and Jimmy Hawthorne hit open shots to j
wiaen usu's lead to 14 points with 13:36 |
remaining.

Georgia Tech couldn't keep up, as they

"Our defense is improved, and it showed

USC's defense kept Georgia Tech's second

"We didn't get the good game from Salley

Georgia Tech lacked two senior players

alley are very important factors for his

USC's Jergenson and Hawthorne,

Jergenson, who led USC scoring with 17
