Writing Cen

If essay tests make your stomach
churn, or even if you just can't keep
your participles from dangling, the
English department's Writing Center
may be the solution.
"We work with students at all
levels, from English 101 to
graduates," said Phyllis Fleishel,
who became the center's director last
fall.

on recommendations from teachers,
and others make appointments on
their own, Fleishel said.
Though the center does help,
students shouldn't get the idea that it
is an easy way to get a paper written
for them.
"We don't proofread students'
papers," Fleishel said. "We show
them what to work on to improve their
writing."
Most students snowed improvement,
she said.
I WOULD give the center an A
grade," she said. The backbone of th
Writing Center is 14 tutors, "some ol

extremely dedicated, because it is
draining to tutor. More so than
teaching."
Tutor Jim Givant describes his
tutoring method:"I try to get a
dialogue going, find out what they
(the students) think the problem is,
and I look at what the teacher's
comments (on the paper) are."
i Givant has tutored students at all
levels. He said the main problem
among freshmen is vagueness. "They
settle for what first comes to mind,

Graduate students are rusty when it
comes to writing long papers, he said,
and come in for feedback.
Givant once tutored a 65-year-old
former court of appeals judge from
South Vietnam who was writing a
dissertation.
"WE'VE EVEN gotten calls from
The Washington Post and other
papers asking about grammar,"
Fleishel said.

Like Fleishel, Givant thinks the
Writing Center helps most students,
unless they have a bad attitude.
"Literature is a dying art. High
school doesn't prepare, students for

can't blame high school teachers
altogether," Givant said.
"PEOPLE COME here (college),
and they want to make money. The
average major is business. The irony
is that businesses are crying for
people who can communicate in good
English prose."
While tutoring is a major function of
the Writing Center, it is not the sole
one, Fleishel said. "We also run a hot
line for anyone with a question about
writing. Ana we get some pretty
unusual calls."
Among them were a mother who
called for advice on naming her baby,
a word-puzzle author asking if certain
words were English and a woman who
wanted to know how she could become
a serious, published writer without
leaving her home or spending any
money.
