The first thing a visitor spots in Joe
Stone's LaBorde dorm room is a
bright green spittoon.
It remains in almost annstant ii?p n?
Stone, his roommate Neal Price and
friend Chris Wells develop their
chewing tobacco habit into an art.
The spittoon is an integral part of
their art. "It won't spill, and it keeps
it (tobacco juice) from stinking," said
Stone, a sophomore business major.
"It sure is better than carrying a cup
around.
"Other people think it's a nasty
habit. I think it's more acceptable
tnan it usea to De," ne said.
Price said, "I don't think it's any
worse than smoking."
While their most important tobacco
accessories are in their room, the
tobacco lovers enjoy a good chew just
about anywhere.
Wells, a journalism junior, said,
"It's great at a baseball game. I can't
wait for baseball season. That's why
the game of baseball was invented ?
to have a place to chew.
"Fishing ? now that's another good
place to chew," he said.
Chewing tobacco has caused at
least one problem, Stone said. "We've
been having a lot of trouble in the
library."
However, Stone said they are able
to chew just about anyplace else.

process, Stone said.

They are so enthusiastic about
chewing tobacco that they have
started building a pyramid of Skoal
tobacco cans.
The multi-level collection rises
from a shelf to almost touch the
ceiling.
They have recently started another
pyramid with the empty tobacco
containers.
"We're going to try to finish another
one," said Price, an undeclared
freshman. 'We're going to use two
different kinds (of tobacco): Skoal
and Copenhagen."
Stone said he started the hobby
because it is unique.

collecting. It was something nobody
else had in their room," Stone said.
They also explained some of the
more important aspects of chewing
tobacco as only true tobacco connoisseurs
could.
Experience is important when
considering a brand of tobacco. "It
depends on whether you are a
beginner or not," Price said. "I would
suggest you start with something
mild."

"It's a cheap way to get a buzz," mm
Price said, "but if you have been ssgtmmm
dipping and chewing as long as we
have, it doesn't affect you as much."
Price said a good way for a
oeginner to start with chewing :
tobacco is to wrap it up in a wad of
bubble gum.
'But don't swallow it," Wells said. ' {
"It will make you toss your cookies."

The men also revealed some of their
secrets on now to better enjoy _
chewing tobacco.
"The hotter it is, the more your i
saliva glands open up, and the better H jj
the taste," Price said.
Moving the tobacco in the mouth
establishes a better flavor, Price said.
"The more you move it around, the
more flavor you get."
Price said he buys his tobacco in ?

"It's cheaper and fresher. If you
buy it by the tube, you can out it in the
refrigerator, and it stays fresher j.
