Jets' president Jim Kensil said he
would begin the search for a successor
immediately. Joe Walton, the
Jets' offensive coordinator, is
probably the leading candidate.
"I have spent 32 years in this game,
and I've enjoyed them all," the 53year-old
Michaels said in a prepared
statement issued through the club.
"But in that time, I've never taken a
vacation and have never spent enough
time with my family. Now I think it's
time that I should, so I am retiring as
head coach of the Jets effective
Tuesday, Feb. 8,1983."
B1LL1E JEAN KING, 39 years old
and feeling "my life's running out,"
said the i983 women's tennis tour is
probably her last.
"My time's running out, and I've
*ot a lot to do, so here I am, 39, and
I'm still playing tennis," she said.
"I want to do something else with
riy life, too. I've always had a sense of
irgency, and I just want to have time

naybe do some reading.
