.sports Irish shut t By Dennis Switter SOUTH BEND, Ind. ? Notre Dame did something no other basketball team has done in order to beat USC 66-56 at the Athletic and Convocation Center Saturday. The Fighting Irish completely shut down Jimmy Foster. Foster, the Gamecocks' leading scorer and rebounder, was held to five points, hitting only two of seven shots from the floor. Foster had a .662 field goal shooting percentage going into the game and was ranked among the nation's leaders in that category. "THEY DID AN exoflllfint inh nf lr??*?r?incr J ? ..v.?.K...6 the ball away from him." said USC acting head coach Steve Steinwedel. "Just about every game we've lost, he's had a poor game. There really hadn't been a team able to do that," he said, referring to Notre Dame's ability to keep the ball from Foster. "I thought we did an excellent job defensively on Foster," said Notre Dame Head Coach Digger Phelps. "I was more concerned about him than with anyone else, and we did an excellent job of taking him out of the game."' FOSTER SAID, "I've played fairly well in the last nine or 10 games. You're going to play bad occasionally. It happens to everybody. There's not a whole lot you can do about it. "That's the best defense against me, personally. They switched off well inside. My first shot fell; my next six didn't. I think I'm a better player than that," he said. Foster tried to downplay what the coaches said about his being so important to the Gamecock offense. "I'M NOT AS BIG a key as people think I am. They did a good job inside. They shut down my game," Foster said. Foster's game is taking the ball to the basket. The Notre Dame defense made Foster go away from the basket instead of toward it, Steinwedel said. "When they did that, he forced a few shots. "They came out at the start of the second half. That was the turning point of the ball game," Steinwedel said. The Gamecocks had three assists in the game, compared to 18 for Notre Dame. Both teams had 24 rebounds. THE GAMECOCKS started out strong, taking an 11-6 lead after two consecutive jump shots by Jimmy Hawthorne. Hawthorne was the leading scorer with 20 points, hitting nine of 10 from the floor and two of three from the foul line. The Irish took the lead at 16-15 with 8:11, left in the first half. Although the Gamecocks were able to stay close, they were never able to retake the lead, falling behind by 13 with 14:05 left in the game. USC was able to whittle that down to six on a pair of Kenny Holmes free throws with 6:33 remaining. Notre Dame then went into a delay offense and put the game out of reach for the Gamecocks. TIM KEMPTON led the Irish in scoring with 19, all coming in the second half. John Paxson, Notre Dame's All-American, had 10 points on five field goals. "Kempton was the difference in the game in the second half," Steinwedel said. "We just forgot about him. One of our goals was to keep the ball from Kempton. "We weren't creating bad shots on Notre Dame's part." PHELPS SAID the win was a big factor for the Irish to receive a bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association post-season tournament. He said Notre Dame, USC, DePaul, Marquette and Dayton are the major independents with a chance of going to the tournament. "We had to make a commitment to win," Phelps said. "I think South Carolina has done an outstanding job this year. I thought we showed a lot of maturity against a very good ballclub." Phelps' team is now 12-7.
