Matt Shannahan had lived in Idaho
all his life. "It was time to do
something different," he said.
Tricia LaRose was tired of the
freezing weather at the State
University of New York ? Potsdam,
such as the -173 degree wind chill
factor a friend told her hit there last
week.
Both decided to become part of the
National Student Exchange program,
which allows students to exchange
places with students at other colleges
and universities for up to a year.
"I just wanted to get away," said

Brian Reid, a junior accounting

also. The Flossmoore, 111., native had
considered coming to USC as a
freshman but decided to attend the
closer Illinois State University.
Reid decided to come to USC this
semester for a change of pace.
Another factor in his decision was that
he had heard USC was developing a
good business school.
Marianne Krall, a marine science
and zoology junior from the
University of Maryland, came to USC
because of the marine science
department's reputation. "There are

Krall said another reason she chose
USC was because her family used to
vacation in South Carolina.
The exchange students are faced
with a variety of problems when they
come to a different place, the main
one being they don't know anyone, the
students said.
Shannahan, a business
management iunior. countered this
problem by coming to USC with two
friends from Idaho, which he said
made the transition easier for him.
