I|| When USC faces 18th-ranked
iff Memphis State University tonight
pjn Carolina Coliseum it will be the
|||fr'irst time in 11 years that Gamecock
fgjjfans have seen a basketball conference
game.
Ijll "We are very happpy about bein
the Metro (Metropolitan
ollegiate Athletic Conference),"
i^USC basketball coach Bill Foster
pfcaid. "It's a great league and we
afpook forward to becoming a part of
plits great tradition." '
The Tigers, along with their naIiPtional
ranking, also bring to Col
Iumbia Keith Lee, one of the
premier players in college
basketball.
LEE, A 6-10, 205-pound junior
from West Memphis, Ark., averaged
18.7 points and 10.7 rebounds as
a sophomore, and is contributing
17 points and 11 rebounds a game
in is season.
"Lee makes everyone on the
||j court a better player," Foster said.
i|f The two-time All-American passW
ed up a chance to play in the Naif
tional Basketball Association this
1 year saying, "the only hardship is
I I not getting an education."
However, Lee is not the only
player the Gamecocks will have to
worry about. The Tigers return all
v five starters from the past year's
1 23-8 team that made it to the
m semifinals of the midwest regionals.
"THEY HAVE excellent depth,
v and have outstanding size and ex1
cellent quickness off the ball. They
'1 are a sound team," Foster said. "I
i have been very impressed with the
* wav thev have olaved this vear.
I They certainly fit into their national
ranking."

Assistant coach Dave Blank
singled out two Tiger players who
could give Carolina trouble: Bobby
Parks and Phillip "Doom"
Haynes.
Parks, a 6-5 senior forward, is
averaging 11 points and seven rebounds
a game.
Memphis State coach Dana Kirk
said, "He doesn't know anything
about backing off. He's been with
us for three years and I've never
heard him say a negative word.
Bobby is one of the few players I
know who actually looks at defense
first. He can play the whole defensive
floor."

HAYNES, A 6-3 senior guard, is
averaging 13 points a game, and has
scored more than 1.000 Doints in his
career at Memphis State.
"We are going to try to stop their
inside game," Hank said. "We are
going to make them shoot from the
outside as much as we can."
He said Carolina is worried
about the defenses Memphis State
uses.
"They throw a lot of different
defenses at you during a game,"
Blank said. "They have a 2-2-1 full
court press that they use effectively,
and if we get it across half-court
they'll usually fall back into a manto-man
defense.
"AND IF they have a lead they'll
run a 2-3 defense then it's really
hard to get it inside on them."
Blank, however, said he is not
worried about starting a freshman
guard at point guard against the
ligers.
"Michael Foster is a very capable
guard. He has a lot of learning to
do, but he's done a good job of
what we have run up against so
far," Blank said.
Howevei, he said he is worried
about the Gamecocks' outside
shooting.
GOING INTO tonight's game,
Jimmy Foster is the leading rebounder
in the league, averaging
more than 10 a game. He's the
second-leading scorer, averaging 19
points a game; and the secondleading
field-goal shooter, averaging
63.3 percent.
