New studio equipment for video tape .
production is being bought by the Carolina
Program Union's Video Tape Committee.
4'This new equipment will give us the
ability to make our own 'videos,' " Committee
Chairman Charles Tuten said. "We
will have a studio in the Russell House
where students will be able to use their
creativity to produce shows.
"They will have the opportunity to gain
experience working with video equipment in
the actual production of programs," Tuten
said.
THE COMMITTEE PLANS to tape such
things as comedy and satire, campus news
and appearances of bands and acts at the
Golden Spur, Tuten said. He said the
committee also hopes to do some
programming in conjunction with the
theater and media arts departments.
The new equipment, costing about $18,000,
should be ready by the beginning of next
semester, Tuten said. It includes an editing
system, cameras, monitors, two videotape
decks, lights and microphones.
The committee's present equipment is
only for black and white productions, but the
new equipment will produce color
A
videotapes.
"The new equipment will also enable us to
edit tapes, which is something we can't do
now," committee adviser Craig Cunningham
said. "The committee will also

TUTEN SAID the committee has had to
patch its old equipment because the committee
was not allocated enough money to
buy new equipment. Most of that old
equipment must be replaced, he said.
"The committee is responsible for
programming videotapes to be shown on a
monitor beside the Russell House Information
Desk," Cunningham said. "But
we haven't been able to show any this
semester because of equipment failure."
The new equipment will eventually save
money, Tuten said. For instance, the
committee spends $150 to rent a
professionally made concert videotape.
With the new equipment, it can produce its
own tapes and reduce its reliance on others.
USC students will be able to make tapes
the university will keep permanently,
saving the university the expense of renting
professionally made videotapes, Tuten said.
' Cunningham said another monitor, in
addition to the one beside Russell House
Information Desk, may be placed in the
Golden Spur, giving student productions
good exposure.
New members are welcome and will be
allowed to work on the new videotape
productions, committee officials said.
Cameramen, comedy and news writers,
actors, masters of ceremonies and set .
designers are needed.
