Camelot lives again I
The days of knighthood, chivalry and
jousting are alive and well through a
growing organization called the Society for
Creative Anachronism (SCA).
The SCA was formed in California about
17 years ago by a group of people interested
in medieval life and culture. The
organization has divided the United States
into nine different kingdoms composed of
numerous "cantons." Columbia's group is
the canton of Cyddylaine Downs of the
rancipa ityot Atiantia.
According to Lord Donavon Delann of the
House of Delann ? alias USC student Terry
Martin ? the SCA is "a weird combination
of the feudal system, democracy and zip
codes."
CANTONS ACROSS the nation
periodically compete in events consisting of
medieval games of skill. Martin said these
events vary from state to state, but all focus
on the authentic portrayal of medieval life.
A typical event occurs on a weekend,
involving between 40 and 60 people. Major
competitions may field 60 to 120 participants.
Occasionally, cantons even
"make war" against each other.
A biennial Crown Tournament is held to
decide who will rule each kingdom, and the
cantons file various allegiances and
grievances.
Martin said the SCA offers two benefits to
its members. The first is "just plain fun" ?
the SCA provides an excuse to dress up and
make-believe in a world wnere everytning
can seem too serious.
THE SECOND benefit is the concentration
on another life as important to
SCA members as the present. Martin said
people find living a duke's life, for example,

feudal system is at work.''
The system does not annul women's
rights, according to Martin. There are
female as well as male "fighters."
A fighter is a person 18 years or older who
defends his or her honor with the handmade
rattan weapons and authentic armor of the

stress authenticity in weapon design.
In keeping with medieval social structure,
complaints must follow the chain of power
before satisfaction can be achieved, Martin
said.
THE KINGDOMS' chain of power is
strictly adhered to. The king wins his title by
"right of combat" and may choose a woman
to be his queen. If a woman wins by right of
combat, she is queen and may select a
companion as her consort.
Second in the line of command are the
crown prince and princess. The duke and
duchess are next, followed by the count and
countess. The title of duke is bestowed upon
one who has been king twice previously; a
count receives his title after one period as
king.
The knight must be well versed in
chivalry, courtship, medieval dance and
chess.
Martin described the baron and baroness
as the heads of a "barony" of 15 people, with
at least three "lords" and "ladies." A
baron's duties vary with each canton.
LORDS AND ladies, by virtue of accomplishment
of "outstanding things," in
Martin's words, are a step up from the
