"The Wedding Perty," en etching by Boyd Si
medio presented in the ennuel USC Art Fecult
Exhibit displays
From Steff Reports
Light beer cans and cigarette butts
shaded in green, blue and purple. A ceramic
calico cat curled up asleep on a flowered
cushion. A pastel house on Pendleton Street.
A monstrous wall made of paper, with
broken glass and twisted metal at the top.
This montage is just descriptive of USC's
annual t acuity art exhibit at McKissick
Museums. Forty-six new works are on
display in the first floor art gallery. The
works are in several different media:
watercolor, ceramics, acrylic paintings,
and a few new approaches ? handmade
paper and Xerox drawings.
The exhibit will be on display Sunday. The
show includes the work of full-time members
of USC's Department of Art and
reflects each artist's current concerns and
experiments.
Karen Koblitz's "Rose," a ceramic calico
cat curled up asleep on a flowered cushion
beneath a potted plant on a shelf, is a touch
of home.

pencil works for the exhibit. One titled "Mr.
President, Is It True?," shows Ronald
Reagan again and again; finger on mouth or
chin or pointing; head cocked, expression
varying from thoughtful to serious to
whimsical.
The artist shows his interest in the
political arena in another prismacolor
pencil work called "The Car Moving
Slowly." In it, a political candidate is seated
in a car in a parade. The hand of a person
reaching out toward him obscures the

tries to touch his arm. A photographer in the
background is shooting pictures over his
head to capture the essence of the moment.
Boyd Saunders' "Threnody for Heroes
and Dreams" is a mixed media drawing
that combines a sense of the past with objects
of present beauty. A war calendar

and insignia and photos of a baby and the
Delta Queen.
Perhaps the most radical part of the
exhibit is Barbara Layne's "Wall: 17th and
Athens" ? a huge wall made of paper and
topped by broken glass and twisted ihetal.
ONE OF the most beautiful parts of the
exhibit is Cynthia Colbert's porcelain
baskets, which look like ones little girls once
carried on Easter Sunday.
Also dominant in the exhibit are three
large paintings by Phillip Mullen. "Susan's
Island" is a large gray canvas with a curtain
of brightly colored, textured forms
floating across it. j
Tiw* "

painting that bursts with clouds, stars and
human figures. The star image is repeated
in Nell Lafaye's canvas filled with floating
red star shapes.
