Grip change helps
py uenni? jwiwh
For USC golfer Rick Sepp, a small grip
change has resulted in a big change in his
golf game, with fruitful results: a tournament
championship.
Sepp Won the South Carolina Intercollegiate
Golf Championship at Hampton,
S.C., Oct. 28-30 with a score of 210. About a
week before the tournament, Sepp changed
his grip, going from a strong left-hand grip
to a weak grip.
When it came time for the tournament,
Sepp did not want to go because he hadn't
been playing that well. But golf coach Bobby
Foster convinced Sepp to go to the tourna

"I went down there with the attitude to
help the team. I really surprised myself,"
Sepp said.
Sepp said he wasn't very comfortable with
the new grip and hadn't adjusted that well to
it.
"I didn't really trust it, but I stayed with
it.

time, but I hit some good shots, so I stayed
with it," Sepp said.
He explained that he hit a lot of hook shots
with the strong grip he had been using.
Sepp, a junior business major from
Hamilton, Ontario, played in the second slot
last fall, but said he had a bad spring and
there has been no set lineup for this fall.
"Just whoever is playing well that week
gets the number one spot," Sepp said.
Although the golf season is over for fall,
the team will play in some tournaments in
spring. Right now, the team is working on
Nautilus weights for strength and flexibility

Sepp said he is looking forward to the spring
tournaments not only because he is playing
better, but because he believes the team
can get a bid to the National Collegiate
Athletic Association tournament.
Sepp said he has a lot of good things going
for Mm now: confidence and a tournament
championship title.
And all because of a little grip change.
