NEW YORK ? USC quarterback Gordon Beckham ha!
been selected as a National Football Foundation and Hall o
Fame Scholar-Athlete for 1982.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Chairmar
Vincent dePaul Draddy following the meeting of the Foun
\ i elation's Awards Committee, headed by Colonel Leonarc
(Deadeye) Henry.
Beckham, a 6-1, 186-pounder from Atlanta, Ga., is ar
English major with a 3.78 average. He is now starting
quarterback for Coach Richard Bell's Gamecocks.
Bell said, "It's a great honor for Gordon, and he deserves

"HE MEANS a lot to us," Bell said. "It was a difficult
situation with him not starting at the first of the year, but he
came along well.
"We appreciate him, and he's a good influence for the
football team," Bell said.
In addition to Beckham, the other 10 Foundation ScholarAthletes
include: Dave Rimington, University of Nebraska,
center; David Folsom, Brown University, defensive back;
Douglas Freeman, Oklahoma State, center; Daniel Gregus,
University of Illinois, tackle: Robert Marians Tiniv#?rcifv r?#
Kentucky, tight end; Gregory Porter, Washington State
University, tackle; Michael Redding, Holy Cross College,
flanker; Brent Woods, Princeton University, quarterback;
David Schreck, U.S. Air Force Academy; and Joseph Smith,
Ohio State University.
FOLSOM, A 6-0,185-pound pre-med student at Brown, hails
from Providence, R.I., and has a 3.87 grade point average
there after transferring from Ricks College, where he had a
3.9 average. He plays defensive back for Coach John Anderson's
Bears.
Freeman, a native of Collingsville, Okla., compiled a 3.7
average majoring in mechanical power engineering
technology. The 6-1. 250-DOUnder nlav#?d onp epncnn at flnarrf
and three years at center for Coach Jimmy Johnson's
Cowboys.
Gregus, the Fighting Illini's 6-5, 250-pound tackle, majors
in marketing, has a 4.86 average on a 5.0 scale and won

Academic All-America honors as a junior. He's from Hickory
Hills, 111.
Mangas, & native of Lexington, Ky., is a 6-2, 220-pound
political science major and.plans a law career after
graduation. A Phi Beta Kappa nominee, Mangas has helped
Coach Jerry Claiborne's rebuilding of the Bluegrass Wildcats
from his tight end position. His grade point average is 3.6.
Porter, a 6-4, 220-pound tackle from Pleasant Hill, Calif.,
has a 3.76 grade point average while majoring in business
administration. The offensive tackle has helped Coach Jim
Walden's Cougars' rushing tzame.
Redding, a 6-0, 185-pound flanker for Coach Rick Carter's
Crusaders, majors in economics and has a 3.54 grade point
average. He is a Rhodes Scholar candidate from North Attleboro,
Mass.
RIMINGTON, A 6-3, 290-pounder, won both All-America
and All Academic All-America honors as a junior. The native
of Omaha, Neb., stands 6-3 and weighs 290 pounds. An
economics major, he has a 3.2 average while playing for Tom
Osborne's Cornhuskers. He won the Outland Trophy as a
junior as the nation's most outstanding interior lineman.
Schreck, majoring in electrical engineering with a 3.47
grade point average, is from Coon Rapids, Iowa. The 6-4,258pounder
plays both guard and tackle for Kenny Hatfield's
Falcons.
Smith, a 6-3, 274-pounder from Columbia, Ohio, has a 3.4
grade point average while majoring in animal science. He
plans to become a veterinarian after his collegiate football
career is over, we nas played center, guard and tackle for
Earle Bruce's Buckeyes.

Woods, Coach Frank Navarro's 6-0, 176-pound quarterback,
calls San Diego his home. He majors in the Woodrow
Wilson School for Public and International Affairs and has a
3.77 grade point average. He plans post-graduate study in law
and international relations.
