Discrimination, harassment and other
issues concerning women were discussed at
the Women's Career Conference, held
Friday and Saturday at The Carolina Inn.
Women in the S.C. business community
attended the conference and discussed
issues such as communications in the
business world, job searching, career
assessment and political preparedness.
The conference's purpose was to provide
community women an opportunity to meet

auu ueveiup social ana professional contacts.
USC's Adult Learning Center and
Midlands Technical College's Women's
Center sponsored the conference.
Although issues discussed were geared
toward the woman's position in the job
market, the discussions were valuable to
people with varied career objectives.
In a presentation on "Risk Taking,"
Jennet Robinson, Chief of Staff of the S.C.
Lieutenant Governor's Office, said taking
risks is a "scary business ? r all of us...the
whole key to this thing is feeling good about
yourself."

Conference discussions emphasized selfawareness
and growth with particular attention
given to job motivation and keys to
success.
' "No pain, no gain" was a resounding
theme throughout the conference.
"Career planning is not something you do
once and come up with an answer," said
Miriam Freeman, former director of USC's
Adult Learning Center.
A "lifelong learning process" provides
techniques of self-assessment in the job
mantel, personal SKUIS and interest and the need
for growth within a certain field,
Freeman said.
Columbia Women's Network, an informal
group of Columbia women that creates a
setting for resource utilization, provides
women with information on career opportunities.
Participation in the Network is open to all
interested women.
Membership is $5 per year and includes a
monthly newsletter.
The Network meets the second Thursday
each month at 6 p.m. at 100 Wayne St.
