community. The committee will be composed
of faculty members from the school,
educators from the local school district and
members of the community.
These committees will seek to meet the
needs of handicapped students in elementary
and secondary schools by soliciting
community volunteers to provide special
services to the students.
me key to the program, Krents said, is
volunteerism ? people helping people for
the common good. Local organizations that
help the handicapped will also be given the
opportunity to help in the program.
The program, Holderman said, is an
enhancement program that will go beyond
what the public sector is doing. The committees
will work with the public sector to
ensure that all handicapped students in the
state are given the opportunity to reach
their full mental capacity.

Krents echoed this sentiment in his
speech. "The program will, through
volunteerism, help people to develop to their
fullest potential whatever that potential
may be."
Krents, blind since his childhood, has been
instrumental in establishing programs to
help the handicapped nationwide and said
he was delighted by the enthusiasm with
which USC officials accepted this challenge.
Immediately following the announcement
of the new program, Student Government
President Ashley Abel presented Bush with

The conference at USC this week aims to
improve education in the participating
countries, Grayson said. "We expect in the
course of the next three years we will be
able to share information and do some indepth
analyses of how the various countries
are using communications and information
technologies to improve their educational
systems," Grayson said. "We also want to
share some of our experiences and learn
from one another so we won't make the
same mistakes again."

Grayson said this and other conferences
during the next three years will generate a
