From Staff and Wire Reports
While higher education spending increases
have declined in South Carolina in
the past two years, the state continues to
rank high in college spending in relation to
its wealth and population.
For 1982-83, the national average per
CaDita aDDrODriatiftn for hitfhpr
m -r VMUVUVIVll
was $106.04. South Carolina spent nearly
$120 per capita, ranking it 19th in the nation.
South Carolina ranked ninth in higher
education spending per $1,000 of personal
income nationally.
Higher education spending in South
Carolina increased only 8 percent during the
past two years, placing the state 39th
nationally in spending increases.
When inflation is figured into the formula,
the state has actually lost about 8 percent in
purchasing power between June 30,1980 and
June 30,1982.
Those figures come from a national study
conducted by M. M. Chambers, a professor
of educational administration at Illinois
State University. Chambers has conducted
the survey since 1958.
