Study shows S From Staff and Wire Reports While higher education spending increases have declined in South Carolina in the past two years, the state continues to rank high in college spending in relation to its wealth and population. For 1982-83, the national average per CaDita aDDrODriatiftn for hitfhpr m -r VMUVUVIVll was $106.04. South Carolina spent nearly $120 per capita, ranking it 19th in the nation. South Carolina ranked ninth in higher education spending per $1,000 of personal income nationally. Higher education spending in South Carolina increased only 8 percent during the past two years, placing the state 39th nationally in spending increases. When inflation is figured into the formula, the state has actually lost about 8 percent in purchasing power between June 30,1980 and June 30,1982. Those figures come from a national study conducted by M. M. Chambers, a professor of educational administration at Illinois State University. Purnell has received nationwide praise for his warm, informal and humorous style. He will be focusing on interpersonal relationships during his series with talks entitled, "How to Live With Yourself and Like It" (Tuesday), "Why Couples Break Up" (Wednesday) and "Sex and the Search for Intimacy" (Thursday). "My overwhelming emphasis is to communicate to students the difference God can make in helninc our intprnprcnnal , 0 w^wgvnui relationships become successes rather than failures," Purnell said. A 1962 Wheaton College graduate, Purnell has served on the Campus Crusade ,.for Christ staff for the past 20 years. He also earned another master's degree in counseling from Indiana University. Purnell teaches at the International School of Theology in San Bernadino, Calif., where he trains students to become public speakers. Purnell's visit here is sponsored by USC's chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ. nnn COLUMBIA PSYCHIC Mary Green will help University Bookstore celebrate Halloween week with an Oct. 25 appearance at the bookstore. Green, who claims she can "see" a person's past and future by simply talking to him, will answer questions posed by USC students, staff, faculty and the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Green will answer each question for 50 cents, and the money will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia. The money will be added to the donations Carolina Cares collects at Christmas to give to needy people in the Columbia area.
