Jazz series ide
By Becky Burnette
Two USC jazz bands performed Wednesday
at the Golden Spur before a rather
skeptical, but responsive crowd of about 100.
Both performances kicked off a new "jazz
night" series sponsored by Contemporary
Sounds.
John Crowley, one of three assistant

working to present alternate types of entertainment
to USC students.
"We're trying to diversify. Rock 'n4 roll
itself is taking on more and more of a jazz
influence," Crowley said. He said a risk is
involved when something new such as the
jazz series is tried, but said he felt the
students would respond positively.
CONTEMPORARY SOUNDS plans to
bring two more "jazz nights" to the Spur
tnis semester, on Nov. 17 and Dec. 1.
The evening's main feature, the Left Bank
Band, was directed by John Emche. The
band performed at the Spoleto Festival in
Charleston this summer; most of its
members are music department graduate
students or performance majors.

The group began the first set with a series
of solos from trombone, trumpet and tenor
saxophone. Hans Teuber, on tenor
saxophone, seemed to dominate the performance
with his confidence and musical
skill. Trombonist Eddie Bird was not far
behind, repeatedly demonstrating his
fidelity.
Later, the crowd's attention began to
wane until vocalist Janie Howell took
command of the stage. She sang several
numbers, immediately reviving the
audience.
TEUBER DOMINATED the second set
even more than the first, which pxritpH
crowd.
The second band, the USC Jazz Ensemble,
played with basically the same style as the
Left Bank Band. Although the audience
enjoyed the Ensemble, people seemed to get
weary once Teuber, Bird and Rowell left the
stage. Directed by Peter Einhorn, the
Ensemble played until about midnight.
Overall, the "jazz night" was warmly
accepted. As Crowley had predicted, the /
student audience seemed to aDoreciate
something new.
overcrowded with refugees; the Swiss officials
were simply yielding to Nazi
pressure to turn Jews back.
The suspenseful story concerns a group of
Jewish refugees and Nazi defectors posing
as a family.
