We have become an increasingly
dependent society ? dependent on
others to provide food, deliver services,
listen and respond to ideas. In
turn, each of us in some small way
provides something that adds
something to the world; John Donne
once told us "never send to know for
whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
This is true, because when one person
dies, there is a small part of all of us
that passes away, too.
We have developed into a
generation whprp r*nntar?t ic
tremely vital. It is almost impossible
to imagine anyone who is not touched
by something in the outside world; we
are a product of what we do, what we
see and experience, and with whom
we come in contact.
So what happens when one of us
goes awry? It affects society as a
whole. We have been conditioned into
thinking that 4 'one vote doesn't
matter" or "what can I do to change
anything?" But we need only look

affect us.
The Tylenol scare ? one person's
mad delusion ? has forced a company
to recall an entire product, spurred
law enforcement officials to work
intensely at cracking the case,
terrified an entire country and, lest
we forget, killed eight people. One
person can point a gun at an important
official, pull the trigger, and
change the course of history. John
Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Anwar
Sadat ? how would things be different
if they had lived?
One person terrified the entire city
of Atlanta last summer, just as Son of
Sam paralyzed New York a few years
ago.
And one drunk driver can literally
wreck an 3ntire ^family, affecting
relatives, friends and co-workers.
There is a flip side to this, however.

one young man, Lenny Skutnik, when
he risked his life to pull a drowning
woman out of the icy Potomac when
an Air Florida jet crashed into a
Washington, D.C., bridge? Or what
motivated a soldier on the front lines
of combat in the jungles of Vietnam?
As hard as it is for us to believe,
there is a Lenny Skutnik in all of us.
Even more difficult for us to believe,
there is a Lee Harvey Oswald in all of
us, too. Don't be alarmed! This is not
to say that we are all going to turn into
homicidal maniacs ? or Medal of
Honor winners either, for that matter.
But the potential is there. It is up to
psychologists, sociologists and other
experts to learn what pushes people to
the extreme. Until then, we must
realize our dependency on everyone
else and our common experiences
with one another. After all, "no man is
an island unto himself."
