Eye drops need more tests
HI ALTO, Calif. (AP) - A woman has been treated for
severe eye burns after using eye drops that her doctor said
contained high levels of acid. But law-enforcement
authorities tested the drops today and said they were
"perfectly normal."
"We think it was a false report," said Police Chief
rvayiiiuuu r armer, wno reporiea me preliminary test
results.
Another official, Juanita Jaronski of the San Bernadino
County criminal lab, said it was too early to say if there was
something wrong with the drops.
"We've only done some preliminary checking, all they've
done so far is check the Ph (the level of acidity) of the
solution," said Ms. Jaronski, administrative assistant to the
lab director.
"Based on what we've determined, there is some acid in it
(the solution), but the question is whether it has more than it
should. We don't have any comparative figures from the
manufacturer yet."
Visine A.C. drops normally contain small amounts of acid.
It was the second case of tainted over-the-counter
medication reported in a week. Seven people in the Chicago
area died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol that had been
laced with cyanide.

neagan warns cat to register
BIRMINGHAM, Ala, (AP) - At first glance, Omar Katz
seems an unlikely prospect for a Republican get-out-and-vote
campaign.
After all, he's only 5 years old and can't read.
He's also a cat.
Yet Omar Katz was one of many Jefferson County
residents to get a letter recently signed by President Reagan,
exhorting him to perform his civic duty and register to vote.
Sent out by the Alabama Republican Party, the letter
oegan wnn "uear b ellow American" and bemoaned the fact
that many people don't vote on election day.
Omar's owner, Jan Lewis, was at a loss to explain how
Omar made the mailing list.
"I have no idea how they got his name on their list," Ms.
Lewis said. "I didn't even get a letter. He was preferred over
me.
"But since the president is so concerned about him, I'll do
anything to help. I figured I'd take him down (to the courthouse)
and sign him up," she said.

Saudi Arabia warns
Saudi Arabia, conservative guardian of Islam in the Arab
world, warned Iran's revolutionary Moslem leaders they 1
face a "no holds barred" war with all Arab states unless they i
accept mediation to end the war with Iraq. 1
"Arao Moslem Sudan said it was prepared to send troops to
aid Iraq in the two-year-old Persian Gulf conflict.
The threats came Sunday as Iran announced its third attack
in as many days against Iraqi positions east of Baghdad,
the capital, in the central sector of the warfront. Iraq says its
forces repulsed all three Iranian assaults.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Saadoun Hammad flew to New j
York on Saturday to represent his nation at an emergency
U.N. Security Council meeting on the war Monday, convened t
at Iraq's request.
Baghdad also called on Arab, Moslem and non-aligned
nations and the countries in the Organization of African
Unity to sever ties with Iran and provide urgent military and
financial support to Iraq. a
The Saudi royal palace in Jidda issued a statement Sunday c
urging the two ancient Persian Gulf foes to end their war r
through negotiations. c

The Saudi peace appeal was followed by a broadcast on
