USC snaps
By Tim Gochnaur
The victor's ground attack looked like
Patton's army racing through France. The
aerial attack looked like the bombardier
who couldn't find his target.
But Gordon Beckham made the targets he
did find count, and the final result was a 37
10 victory for the Gamecocks over the
University of Cincinnati Bearcats before a
Homecoming crowd of 59,148.
When Carolina didn't move the ball on its
first possession, Cincinnati took over on its
own 28. Two plays later, Carolina defensive

Cincinnati quarterback Danny Barrett and
ran 42 yards to score. After Mark Fleetwood's
PAT, it was Carolina 7-0.
Finney, who has been responsible for
several Homecoming heroics, said the interception
was a matter of being in the right
place at the right time.
"We played the nickel defense (fifth back)
all night," Finney said. "1 played that fifth
back; in fact that's where I was on the interception.
This was the most active I've
been this season. Cincinnati is a weak-side
passing team, and I play on the weak side,
so i guess uiai naa a 10110 ao wun 11.' *
After Fleetwood gave Carolina a 10-0 lead,
Cincinnati started with the ball on its own
21. With a good combination of passing by
Barrett, tough ground work by Allen Harvin,
Clifton Pendergrass and Don Goodman,
and a 15-yard personal foul on Carolina, the
Bearcats got to the Gamecock 22. Senior
booter Jim Fogler drilled one through the
uprights and Carolina led, 10-3.
An exchange of fumbles gave Carolina the
ball at its own 16. Thomas Dendy, Todd
Berry, Carl West and Dominique
Blasingame brought Carolina to the Cincinnati
34. From there Fleetwood kicked a
51-yard field goal and at 12:42 of the second
quarter, Carolina was up 13-3.
Fleetwood's field goal was the third
longest in Carolina history and set a school
record by being the seventh game in which
the place-kicker has kicked at least two field
goals.
"I honestlv didn't know how long that field
goal was," Fleetwood said. "I noticed that
when we set the tee down it was just beyond
the X where you kick off from. I knew as
soon as I hit it, it was good. You can just tell
those kinds of things. Right now my kicking
rhythm seems to be real good and that's the
secret of kicking."
After a punt exchange, a Bearcat drive
stalled at the Gamecock 21. Harry Skipper
broke through to block a 37-yard field goal
attempt.

Carolina took the ball on the 37. Five plays
later, tailback Dendy scooted around the
left end on a Statue of Liberty play for 61
yards and a touchdown. A Fleetwood PAT
made it 20-3, Carolina.
,4I took two steps to the left after getting
the ball and saw a guy break through the
line," Dendy said. "Our pulling guard got
him and I scooted through that hole and the
next thing I knew I was in the end zone.
Bradshaw threw a block for me, too."
In the third quarter, the Bearcats' Phil
Peckich went back to punt. Pat Bowen blew
through the right side and was called for
roughing the kicker.
Six olavs later Peckich again went back to
punt, Bowen fumbled the ball and Cincinnati
pounced on it at the Gamecock 40.
Some quick footwork and rifle-arm accuracy
by Barrett, coupled with running bv
Harvin and Pendergrass, brought the
Bearcats to the 1. Fullback Goodman
plunged over for the touchdown, Fogler hit
for the PAT, and at 5:46, Carolina was up 2010.
Five minutes later, Carolina completed a
13-play, 81-yard drive when Fleetwood
made a 39-yard field goal to bring the count
to 23-10. That upped his record to three
games in which he has kicked three field
goals.
