He said that although most students take care of their checks without having to go to court, those who don't are charged with writing fraudulent checks. "They are brought down (to the police station), fingerprinted and photographed," Jennings said. USC Treasurer Howard Rhodes said the Treasurer's Office received more than $1 million in fraudulent checks during the 198182 school year. He said he thinks many of these bad checks were accidental. "Snmp stnHf*ntQ writp rhprks thinking that their parents will put money into their accounts, and the money doesn't reach the bank in time. Other students think that they have the money in their accounts to cover a check," Rhodes said. Class schedules of students who write bad checks for USC tuition and fees are canceled, but students who write bad checks to pay fines will be prosecuted, Rhodes said. Students should understand that bills can't be paid with a bad check, he said. Rhodes advised students to call the bank to make sure the check will clear before accepting a two-party check. Although bad checks have become a problem, most local merchants are still willing to accept student checks. Gene Long, manager of Cornell Arms Pharmacy, said, "1 don't hesitate to accept student checks. I have learned how to collect on fraudulent checks." He said nearly all bad checks written at Cornell Arms are repaid either voluntarily or through the magistrate. The manager of Food Town in Five Points said that when school opened in August, his store received an additional $200 to $300 per week in bad checks. He recovers the money, he said. HOWEVER, NOT all businesses are willing to deal with the problem. The manager of one local restaurant, who asked net to be identified, said the restaurant had to stop accepting checks after last year. "It really wasn't worth it. We got toomany returned checks. It shows courtesy when we accept checks from students, but when they started bouncing, we had to stop," the manager said. After a merchant receives a bad check, a certified letter is sent to the student, allowing the student five days to compensate for the bad check. If it is not compensated, it is turned over to the magistrate. Jennings advised students to take care of bad checks promptly to avoid getting a police record. ^ *'|r IS.
