Travel abroad, eari
By Cindy Pierce
Travel abroad! See the world! Learn
about different cultures! All while earning
academic credit?
It's possible, according to Chris Ghizas,
Travel/Study Abroad adviser for USC's
International Services. USC students can
arrange study at foreign universities
without much difficulty, she said.
These programs aren't very expensive,
Ghizas said. "Costs are approximately the
same as out-of-state tuition. It varies with
the program," Ghizas said. "There are
limited scholarships and financial aid, but
there are other possibilities."
USC sponsors foreign study in England,
France, Spain, Canada, Germany and
China, but other programs can be arranged.
The Travel and Study Abroad Office,
located in the west wine of Russell House,
houses a library where students can investigate
study programs. These programs
offer a wide variety of requirements, prices
and credits. Time periods a student can stay
abroad vary, although they usually last no

more than a year, Ghizas said.
AFTER A STUDENT has chosen a
program, Ghizas helps complete the application,
get passports and visas and
handle any problems or questions. The
Study Abroad Office now has a "Travel and
Study Guide" available to help students
decide on a program.
Students who go abroad usually do so at
Ihe end of their sophomore years or the
beginning of their junior year, since USC
policy states that a student's last 30 credits
must be completed at the Columbia campus,
Ghizas said.
"Mostly students who are interested in
other cultures and lifestyles take advantage
of this service," Ghizas said. "A lot of times,
when you see how other people live you can
have a better appreciation of how our
country is."
Many international business and
government majors go abroad to learn other
countries' policies firsthand, Ghizas said.
And, of course, studying abroad is a good
opportunity for language majors, she
added.
